Plant One is the Rotterdam-Rijnmond region’s No.1 test facility for sustainable process technology. Plant One fills the gap between laboratory testing and full-scale production. The principal goal of Plant One’s initiators is to encourage and accelerate the process of sustainable development. The petrochemical industry is the largest single industrial consumer of energy, and development of smarter and more efficient production methods is therefore a top priority in this sector.
At Plant One, new technologies to reduce energy and feedstock inputs and use alternative, cleaner feedstocks can be put through their paces quickly and cost-effectively on a pre-industrial scale. This will allow the industry to speed up its efforts to switch to more sustainable modes of production.
Plant One differs from other initiatives in its large-scale approach and its focus on multiple technologies. Plant One provides the space and facilities required for testing a wide range of technologies and applications. Under its umbrella environmental permit Plant One can, moreover, ensure it takes just a few weeks rather than months or even years to secure the required permit for a pilot.
Plant One’s mission is to promote and support ‘competitive sustainability’.
The Port of Rotterdam is keen to be among the international front-runners with respect to sustainability, too, and is therefore working to halve CO2 emissions by the year 2025, relative to 1990. To achieve this objective the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Deltalinqs, the City of Rotterdam and DCMR Environmental Protection Agency Rijnmond are collaborating in the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. Plant One is also contributing to this goal. Plant One intends to develop into a centre of excellence in the realm of sustainable process technology.
